Assistive Technology

Competency H - The teacher candidate demonstrates the knowledge and ability to use a range of assistive technologies to work effectively and equitably with students with disabilities.

Gateway Requirement: Gateway 2 — Admission to Student Teaching (STT Gateway)

Authentic Performance Task: The teacher candidate will pass an on-line examination dealing with questions of technology as related to students with disabilities. The teacher candidate will also demonstrate competency with a set of identified assistive technology devices/software.

Criteria: The teacher candidate will demonstrate knowledge and expertise of the following:

  • Assistive technology devices and services
  • Issues, barriers, and benefits of assistive technology
  • Federal legislation for identifying and using assistive technology
  • High and low assistive technology devices
  • Various input and output devices
  • Ways to arrange the setting to facilitate the use of assistive technology
  • Funding sources to support the use of assistive technology
  • Professionals who can support the use of assistive technology
  • Roles of teachers in the selection, implementation and evaluation of assistive technology for student with disabilities.

Following orientation, the teacher candidate will take an orientation test which must be passed at the 95% level in order to gain access to the next phase of hands-on experience at the SEAT Center. Experiences consist of working with different pieces of assistive technology to support both the aforementioned topics and the following topics:

  • Use of built-in accessibility features in Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
  • Conversion of standard print materials to digitalized text and subsequent use of a screen reader to read the digitalized text.
  • Correct and appropriate use of the close-captioning and text features included with most TV systems.
  • Correct and appropriate use of a TDD system.

Training Resources : The teacher candidate will attend a Special Education Assistive Technology Center (SEAT) workshop or independently read online resources.

Assessment Process: The teacher candidate must schedule an appointment with SEAT Center to complete this competency.

Submission Format: The teacher candidate will complete an orientation test and technology demonstration at the SEAT Center. Appropriate materials must be submitted in the student’s electronic portfolio.

Passing Criterion: 95% level of performance on orientation test; 100% level of performance on competency test.
