Telecommunications Competency C - The teacher candidate demonstrates the ability to use asynchronous and synchronous telecommunications effectively. Gateway Requirement: Gateway 2 — Admission to Student Teaching (STT Gateway) See the Competency Homepage for courses associated with this competency. Authentic Performance Task: In order to demonstrate this competency, the teacher candidate must participate in class discussion boards that pertain to educational issues, in accordance with the instructor. In addition, the student will explain an appropriate purpose or rationale for the use of discussion boards in the PK-12 classrooms. The educational purpose must be instructional, administrative or curricular. Students will write a description of what they did and provide an explanation on how they would use this technology in the classroom. Possible discussion topics include how and why a teacher would use asynchronous telecommunication tools for teaching content (i.e., how this would work when teaching math, science, 3rd grade, PreK, etc.). Training Resources: Students are responsible for learning the required skills using available resources. University computer labs provide hardware and software and access to on-line resources. Submission Format: Appropriate materials must be submitted in the student's electronic portfolio. Scoring Rubric: A scoring rubric provides definitive criteria for assessing this competency.
