Web Searching

Competency B - The teacher candidate demonstrates the ability to effectively use web browsers and online databases.

Gateway Requirement: Gateway 1 — Admission to Professional Studies (APS Gateway)

Authentic Performance Task: The teacher candidate demonstrates his or her knowledge about on-line searching tasks via an on-line exam.

Please read and understand the material contained in the Web Searching Resources section of this web site before attempting the on-line exam.

Criteria: Teacher candidates will:

  • identify the differences between (and the reason for choosing) a library online database versus a web search engine.
  • demonstrate how to analyze a search query by breaking it down into concepts.
  • distinguish the difference between keyword and controlled vocabulary searches
  • demonstrate the ability to identify appropriate subject headings where applicable.
  • review search results for relevancy to the search query and interpret data elements in individual records retrieved.
  • identify at least three criteria for evaluating information resources.
  • identify differences between popular and scholarly information resources.
  • distinguish between citations for books, book chapters, and articles.

Training Resources: Students are responsible for learning the required skills using available on-line resources. University computer labs provide hardware and software and access to on-line resources.

On-line Exam: The on-line searching examination is available through the following secure Web site address: https://itps.ais.ilstu.edu/project/. Click on the test you would like to take. Do not close your browser while taking a test as you may lose any answers you have selected. More directions will be given on the page of the test.

A login name and password are needed.

Students will need to use their ULID for the user name and their ISU email password for the password.

NOTE: If you are using the proper login name and password but still cannot access the examination, your login name and password might not be in our database. E-mail for assistance.

Passing Criterion: A score of 90% or above is required to pass this examination. Students may retake the examination as many times as needed to achieve a passing score. Each time a new test is generated. Remember to log off when you have finished.
